Downspout Garden

High winds and a dry climate drove this downspout garden design. Careful plant and material selection was required to ensure that plants could handle drought and withstand storms, all while looking beautiful.

Coarse bedding stand was used as wind-resistant mulch with warm tones that beautifully complement the home’s wood paneling.

While I often advocate for directing downspout drainage into a rain garden (or infiltration basin), this bed was too close to the house. Instead, we opted for rock and gravel catchments to avoid holding water near the home’s foundation. The rock and rugged plant combination is well suited for the harsh climate at this site.

Big thanks to Mike with Pop’s Small Haul for delivering loads of heavy materials to the site!
